Increasing Parent Engagement in K-8 Schools

Westside Neighborhood School (WNS) is a private TK-8th grade independent school located in Playa Vista, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. WNS has a student body of approximately 500 hundred students and 150 faculty members. Throughout the past three years, teachers and administrators have been struggling with decreased parent participation and a lack of response to teacher emails and inquiries since returning to school post-COVID-19, which makes parent communication very difficult and hinders student growth and behavior management.

eLearning Flowchart

I created an eLearning flowchart when preparing to create my final prototype. The eLearning flowchart is essentially a map that the clients/designers can follow to see how learners will move through the learning program. It shows where the learners will start and where they are able to progress forwards or backwards through the different modules. I completed a learner analysis and used Gagne’s Nine Events planner to help me plan out the content for each of the four modules the learners will complete.

eLearning Interactive Slides

This is one of my interactive slides in my final eLearning prototype. In this slide, the learners are instructed to interact with the slides by clicking on each card to reveal more information about each parent engagement strategy. Of the 4 different levels of eLearning interaction, the learners use level 2 interaction on this slide.

Job Aid

I created a job aid for my learners to help them lead empathy-guided conversations with parents. The job aid is intended to be a quick and easy tool teachers can display at in their classrooms or at their desk. The job aid is not meant to instruct learners, but to help remind them of strategies they can implement when having difficult conversations with parents.

eLearning Style Guide

I created an eLearning style guide in preparation for creating my final eLearning prototype. The style guide was a great way for me to make visual and graphic design decisions for my prototype such as: color palette, fonts, font sizing, line spacing, signaling cues, icons, navigational buttons, and more. The style guide helped me make sure that my final prototype looked cohesive throughout its entirety for the learner.

eLearning Prototype

This is the player menu for my final eLearning Prototype. In my prototype, I created learning content for all four modules, intended to teach teachers strategies for increasing parent engagement in their school community. Each module consists of interactive content slides and a knowledge check. At the end of the program, the learner has to pass the summative assessment with a score of 80% or higher.
